Tom Cruise Reveals Title of New Top Gun Installment

The announcement of a Top Gun sequel has been 31-years in the making, as it would come at the end of last month on none other than Sydney's Sunrise program on Channel 7. The 1986 original is still seen as a classic for those that are old enough to remember it, mixing a young heartthrob into an environment of flying jets, fast cars, beautiful women and a soundtrack that stands the test of time.

“It’s true. It’s true,” Cruise told the Australian press. “I’m going to start filming it probably in the next year. I know. It’s happening. It is definitely happening ... you’re the first people that I’ve said this to.”

While many would have expected the movie to be slapped with a simple "Top Gun 2" label, this will not be the case. The action icon has talked about his enthusiasm for the second installment to Access Hollywood and although he did not spoil much in the way of casting, cameos or storylines, he did spill on the actual title of the film.

Same Vibe, Same Score For TG 2.0

Top Gun

With so many reinvented features stripping back from the subject material, Cruise unashamedly said that the new blockbuster will be heavily trading on nostalgia.

"We're gonna have the same tone that we had from the first one," began Cruise. "Stylistically it is going to be the same. We're gonna have the same score from Harold Faltermeyer. I can tell you that."

Seeing the narrative as a fight against internal and external forces for his character, the actor sees his next performance as a progression despite being over three decades previous.

"Aviators are back, the need for speed. We're going to have big, fast machines. Look I'm a pilot... It's going to be a competition film, like the first one and it's gonna be in the same vein as the first one, but a progression for Maverick."

Top Gun: Maverick To Bring Back Jets and Aircraft Carriers

But the big scoop would come next as Cruise offered up the title of the flick. Coming to a theater near you around 2018 or 2019 (release date pending) will be Top Gun: Maverick.

"It's not going to be called Top Gun 2. It is going to be called Top Gun: Maverick. I didn't want a number, you know what I mean? You don't want a number. You don't need a number."

Quizzed about the return for any of the cast from Val Kilmer (Ice Man) to Meg Ryan (Carole Bradshaw), Tom Skerritt (Mike Metcalf), Kelly McGillis (Charlotte Blackwood), Tim Robbins (Sam Wells) or Michael Ironside (Rick Heatherly), Cruise would lock the spoiler volt shut.

"You just gotta see it. You can't talk about it. You just gotta see it," he reiterated. "There's going to be aircraft carriers. There's going to be jets. I'm really excited. It's a great challenge."
