Ewan McGregor Thinks Stand Alone Obi-Wan Films Are Due

Can't help but love Ewan McGregor. While most actors typically flee from franchises that took away too many years of their life, the actor is hinting that he's looking to return to Star Wars. You heard correct, if the actor has his way we could have some Obi-Wan Kenobi solo films. I say films, as in plural, as McGregor is thinking, why not two?

While we can only assume his small bit of voicework for The Force Awakens caused him to miss the franchise, or the money, the actor does admit he hasn't been approached. Yet. But, while making his junket rounds for American Pastoral, the actor showcases some serious Star Wars canon knowledge. So much so that he even has a few ideas for the films.

McGregor's Age Allows for Multiple Obi-Wan Films

While talking with Inverse, Ewan McGregor explains that his current age puts him in the perfect position to play Obi-Wan. At least, the Obi-Wan who lives between the New Trilogy and the Old Trilogy.

Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan

“It would be fun to film that story now I’m older. I’d be the right age. I’m 45, Alec Guinness was what, 60? I could do two of them!”

Though nobody from Disney has begun to court the actor, the extended Star Wars universe provides plenty of stories for Obi-Wan. Take for instance the Marvel Star Wars comic. When Luke discovers Obi-Wan's diary -- being a hermit gives one lots of time to write -- we learn quite a few new facts about the character. Such as what caused his falling out with Uncle Owen, or how Obi-Wan kept in touch with Yoda after Revenge of the Sith.

Obi-Wan Comic

Not interested in Obi-Wan's relationships? Well, we could resort to the novels, that show Obi-Wan hunting for Jedi survivors a decade before A New Hope. During this time Obi-Wan learns that Darth Vader had survived their duel. Unfortunately, most of Obi-Wan's action-packed adventures occurred throughout the New Trilogy. Since we can't return to that era, the film(s) might need to get creative to add excitement to the character's stay on Tatooine.

Ewan McGregor Sees Star Wars Universe as Opportunity for Anyting

Not to be deterred, Ewan McGregor acknowledges that the expanded Star Wars universe is massive, and would allow for an unlimited amount of possibilities for Obi-Wan.

“What is good with Star Wars is that it is very extensive. They have a kind of carte blanche to do stories in this universe that are completely different,” he said.

“Hopefully they will explore different genres under the banner ‘Star Wars,’ and one of them could be a feature film Obi-Wan Kenobi. Or two! Obi-Wan Kenobi Story Part 1 and Part 2!”

Obi-Wan Comic Book

Considering that I'm a big fan of the character and absolutely adore Ewan McGregor, the possibility of spin-off, or stand alone, films seems too good to be true. Besides, I'm still thinking Obi-Wan is a clone. Perhaps we can even go the Rogue One route and make Obi-Wan a bit ummmmm, edgier?
