It's an incredibly enviable position to have to choose between two enormous franchises. A predicament Jeremy Renner has had to face in 2017. The 46-year old is a common face alongside Tom Cruise for Mission: Impossible. And, with a sixth installment on the way, he was expected to show up for duty reprising the part of William Brandt.
Having been a regular in that series starting with 2011's Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol and once more for 2015's Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, Renner has pulled the plug on Mission: Impossible VI. With too much to handle on his plate playing Clint Barton aka Hawkeye in the MCU, the California native has made the judgment that two is better than one as he preps for a double dose of Marvel.
Hawkeye Aiming For More Screen Time
The report comes from ShowBiz 411, outlining how the packed diary proved too much for the actor to keep both parties happy at the same time. This decision has a direct link to Man of Steel star Henry Cavill joining the fold for Ethan Hunt's squad, going from a Marvel regular to a DC icon is the space of a few months.
Hawkeye has been a bit part player for the big ensemble pictures next to the more popular superheroes. At least, until the arrival of Ultron. But his role in Avengers: Infinity War and Ant-Man and the Wasp will see the character developed in a little more depth. Productions for both titles are said to be going back-to-back, seeing the performer double his efforts with the bow and arrow.
Homecoming To Start Where Civil War Left Off
Speaking with Yahoo, Tom Holland stressed that the crossover with the other members like Hawkeye are still relevant to his standalone title without dominating the scene.
"You know I think the posters did a really good job of not taking over what this movie is," he explained. "It's definitely a Spider-Man movie, but grounded in the MCU. The Avengers is definitely a big part of the movie, but they don't in any way overshadow Peter and Spider-Man's arc throughout the movie."
Director Jon Watt also told the website that his cameo in Civil War was so frenetic, Spider-Man: Homecoming will be as much an exercise in Peter Parker coming down from that high as it will be enjoying a new adventure.
"They're a constant presence for Peter because he's just come back from this insane adventures he's just had in Captain America: Civil War where he was essentially plucked from obscurity by Tony Stark. Whisked away to Germany. Given this new high-tech suit. Ended up fighting alongside some Avengers. Against other Avengers. And then it's all over and he gets sent back to Queens. So that experience is still looming in his mind when our movie starts and he's ready to step up and become an Avengers himself."
