Paper Man Trailer (2010)

The trailer for Paper Man.

Paper Man is an inspirational comedic drama about an unlikely friendship between Richard (Jeff Daniels), a failed middle-aged novelist who has never quite grown up and Abby (Emma Stone), a 17-year-old girl whose role in a family tragedy years earlier has stolen away her youth. Both are unsure, both are afraid to take firm steps forward, and both rely on the imaginary friends in their heads to help guide them into the future - for Richard, it is the costumed superhero Captain Excellent (Ryan Reynolds), and for Abby, it's morose fellow teenager Christopher (Kieran Culkin).

At the urging of his wife Claire (Lisa Kudrow), Richard has moved to a Long Island beach community for the winter season in order to overcome his writer's block. There, Richard meets Abby and hires her as a weekly babysitter, even though he has no children. Their tenuous, new friendship is sparked by Richard's awe over Abby's homemade soup and Abby's enjoyment of Richard's writing and his attempts at Origami. As the season progresses and the warm, quirky friendship between Richard and Abby grows, the two begin to share with each other their dreams and life hardships. Becoming the best of friends, Richard and Abby discover there comes a time to let go of imaginary friends of the past and to embrace the future as a new beginning-just as one would embrace a new and unique friendship.

Paper Man stars Lisa Kudrow as Jeff Daniel’s wife and Emma Stone as his teenage best friend. The two actresses starred together in the film Easy A In that film Emma Stone plays a teenager who starts rumors about herself to gain popularity and Kudrow plays her high school guidance counselor.

In Paper Man, Ryan Reynolds plays a superhero who lives within the imagination of Jeff Daniel’s character, Richard. The Superhero is known as Captain Excellent. Reynolds has played two more superheroes, Green Lantern  and Wade Wilson in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Deadpool.

Paper Man filmed in 2006, and then again in 2008, before being released in 2010. When it was finally released it only opened on 3 screens and earned just over $15,000.

Paper Man Trailer Screencap

The trailer for Paper Man has just the right mix of quirky and sweet. Jeff Daniels, who is great in everything he does but chooses his roles carefully, for the most part, is once again incredibly likable as a novelist who has a hard time growing up, whatever that means. He lives his life with the help of an imaginary superhero played by a peroxided Ryan Reynolds, who is the ideal person to be an imaginary friend. Lisa Kudrow plays the wife who just wants Daniels to figure out his life.

Emma Stone comes in as a young girl who becomes friends with Daniels because Emma Stone has a way with older men apparently, or at least that is what we can all surmise based on a majority of her film roles. The trailer for Paper Man has all the trimmings of a low-key drama/comedy that gives audiences a little perspective on life while still making observations about the world and finding humor in all of the tough things.

The cast is so good that it feels like the movie could not go wrong even if it is a bit all over the place. It does not look like the kind of movie that would satisfy a jaded film watcher looking for something sarcastic or dark, it just seems too cozy for that. For us viewers who like the simple but effective low-budget slices of life with added whimsy, Paper Man looks like a sweet treat.
