Anchored throughout his life to the snowbound, sleepy Canadian city of Winnipeg, Maddin travels headlong into his past to forge a new path to freedom. Drawn by the bittersweet pull of family, he returns to his unconventional childhood home – a split-level apartment cum beauty parlor – and moves right back in. Recruiting actors to spar with his "real" mother (played by '40s noir legend Ann Savage) atop the actual floorboards of his memory, he re-creates hilariously awkward moments from his adolescence. Spiraling out to the surrounding city and its peculiar locations and history, he re-imagines a notorious semi-nude civic pride event, a jazz-age séance ballet, a macabre frozen horse photo op, and "If Day," when the whole town pretends that the Nazis have invaded. All the while Maddin travels deep into his own nostalgia, searching for an elusive way out of Winnipeg.

After a fellow agent and close friend is murdered, agent Hubert Bonisseur de la Bath, aka OSS 117, is ordered to take his place at the head of a poultry firm in Cairo. This is to be his cover while he investigates Jack's death, monitors the Suez Canal, checks up on the Brits and Soviets, burnishes France's reputation, quells a fundamentalist rebellion, and brokers peace in the Middle East. A blithe and witty send-up not only of 1950s and '60s spy films and the suave secret agent figure, but also of neo-colonialism, ethnocentrism, and the very idea of Western covert action in the Middle East.

Numb tells the story of screenwriter Hudson Milbank, who suffers from acute depersonalization disorder. So alienated from his own life that he makes the chronically depressed look perky, Hudson lives alone, watches the Golf Channel all day, can't hang on to a relationship, shoplifts in order to get his adrenalin up off the floor, fears that thinking about his dad's death will bring it to pass, loathes his mother and, in general, is as nutty as a crapshack in a peanut farm. Obsessed with the underlying sadness that infuses his wretched existence, Hudson is a man in hell, but he thinks that his long catalogue of dismally unsatisfying and mutually self-destructive relationships is over when Sara stumbles into his life. He knows she can save him. She knows he has to save himself. Together they save each other. And it's funny too.

Numb is due out on DVD on May 13, 2008.
