Trailer for the documentary Bali: Life is an Offering.
The island Bali, roughly three times the size of Maui, is the only Hindu culture among the thousands of other islands in the patchwork nation Indonesia. Any Westerner who has visited Bali has at least puzzled over the daily and constant presence of ritual among its people, especially the expected business of disposable offerings, plaited baskets of coconut stems full of flowers, lit incense, and other simple objects of natural beauty. On any given day one is likely to encounter elaborate ceremonies and the flagrant disposal (by burning or flinging into the water) of carefully fashioned objects. In Bali, anything involving death is a festivity, for death is a victory—a return to our home, from which we quickly springboard back into our next incarnation.
