Another week goes by, another major problem emerges for DC and Warner Brothers. This time the individual caught in the middle of a major mixup and PR disaster is none other than Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, as the 44-year old has seemingly seen his dreams of appearing in a standalone Shazam! movie scuppered by the studio.
A leaked source through Reddit gave a rundown of decisions that apparently took place in the head office where it is alleged that The Fate of the Furious star would have to be a supporting player in Henry Cavill's franchise instead. Much of this has come down to the political back and forth between director Matthew Vaughn's representatives and the studio.
"Firstly, Black Adam will be the main villain in Man of Steel 2," they remarked. "The idea was tossed around of possibly making an appearance in the sequel, even if it was only brief. This later evolved into Adam becoming the villain due to the fact WB did not feel confident in the early drafts of the Shazam! script and felt as if Dwayne Johnson deserved a bigger project (may be linked to how much they're paying him). Second, Matthew Vaughn is still talking to Warner about directing the film, however Warner are talking to other directors as well, which may be an attempt to increase pressure on Vaughn's agent."
Rock In, Out, Shake Shazam All About
The back and forth must be infuriating for those caught in the middle, as the source went on to say that any scheduling for a standalone Rock movie has been put on the back burner. While this is disappointing, the inclusion of Billy Batson aka Captain Marvel will try to be fitted into the scenario in some shape or form.
"Lastly, some bad news, Shazam! is practically off the table at this point. Warner did not feel confident in the first drafts of the script and is much more interested in Black Adam, as I said earlier. Despite this, it is likely that Billy Batson (Captain Marvel) will appear in a film. To what degree? I don't know."
Henry and Dwayne Drink During Better Times
Using their Instagram accounts as the Hollywood pair like to do, Johnson and Cavill wanted to push forward with the separate DC projects before enjoying some drinks together. They might be allies now, but if the Reddit source is to be believed, then they will be locking horns by the time Man of Steel 2 rolls around.
"Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Black Adam and Superman (@henrycavill)," posted Johnson. 'Today we drink like gentleman and come together as friends. We're excited for what the future brings.#DangerousGentlemen #DCWorldsWillCollide #BlackSavagery #MyExfoliatedBaldHeadAndTattoos #LookHellaSexyInThisLighting."
