Trailer for 1944, which screened at PSIFF.
In 1940, the Soviet Union annexed Estonia, drafting 55,000 men to serve in the Red Army. But in 1941, Germany occupied the tiny Baltic country, forcing thousands more Estonians to fight as part of the Waffen SS and other military units. By 1944, the bloodiest battles on the Eastern Front were being fought by soldiers from small nations with slim hope for survival.
1944 focuses on two courageous Estonian staff sergeants. Farm boy Karl, whose family was deported to Siberia, wears the uniform of the SS. Juri, who fights with the Red Army, must contend with a pompous commanding officer who orders him to expose men in his unit who make anti-Soviet remarks.
