At the turn of 2017, it appeared as though the long awaited title Triple Frontier had finally come to fruition. Both Tom Hardy and Channing Tatum were said to be overlooking the screenplay. With their representatives and it was just a matter of time before the action thriller would become reality.
Fast forward to May this year, and all there has been since is radio silence. That is, until now.
Switching hands from Paramount Pictures to Netflix, the streaming service has earmarked three high profile actors to step into the void and make the movie happen. They are Academy Award winner and Moonlight star Mahershala Ali, alongside Ben and Casey Affleck no less.
Affleck's Priming For Gritty Crime Drama In South America
With Zero Dark Thirty and The Hurt Locker writer Mark Boal developing the screenplay, that outlines the tone of a movie that is sure to be an adrenaline-filled ride. Boal had been working diligently behind the scenes since 2009 with none other than Kathryn Bigelow, as the pair were always preparing for her to go on and direct the feature.
When she pulled out of the project altogether, it was essentially left in limbo. Filmmaker J.C. Chandor currently has his hands on the film that has attracted the interest of A-listers like Tom Hanks, Will Smith, Leonardo DiCaprio and Johnny Depp.
Netflix producer Scott Stuber is taking charge of the movie division of the streaming service. All while he looks to revive ailing productions and lift them up to their potential. This will likely be shot on location as it focuses on the geographic region of the Iguazu and Parana rivers that divide the nations of Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina.
This is a hot bed of illegal drug cartel activity where law enforcement have their work cut out for them to keep a lid on the cocaine and heroine trade.
First On Screen Reunion In 20 Years?
The last time Ben and Casey Affleck were on screen together, it was for the 1997 drama Good Will Hunting. Two decades since, and the duo have established themselves as household names.
44-year old Ben has gone on to become a tremendous actor and filmmaker in his own right, directing 2012's Argo which would go on and take that year's Best Picture award at the Oscars. Then 41-year old younger sibling Casey did likewise with a Best Actor's gong for his role in 2016's Manchester by the Sea.
With all of these accolades, the pair won't come cheap for Netflix. But it might just be the challenge they were looking for.
