When an actor remarks that they would rather slash their wrists than come back to work in that role again, the writing is on the wall to suggest the ties have been severed completely. But this is not the case as of yet for Daniel Craig as James Bond. He was last seen in the franchise for 2015's Spectre following on from Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace.
Pocketing millions in the process and making himself a household name, Craig appears reticent to return. And, as a consequence, pundits and bookmakers have created a shortlist of seven contenders in order as to who is favorite to take over.
As Craig performs on the live stage in Othello, the speculation continues in a flurry and comes in the wake of Tom Hardy talking on the subject this week.
James For James - Norton The Bookies Tip
31-year old James Norton has the aesthetic makeup to play a young James Bond, but does he have the acting chops and physical stamina to pull it off? If you believe English bookmakers, then the answer to those questions is a resounding yes for the star of such series as Happy Valley, Grantchester, War & Peace and Black Mirror.
Norton made headlines when he used the term "posh-bashing" to criticize the press for pointing out actors who come from privileged backgrounds. To round out the rest of the top seven favorites to be James Bond, bookmakers have included Mad Max: Fury Road lead Tom Hardy in third to overlook his remarks that if you mention the role in public, you are immediately out of the running. Boardwalk Empire star Jack Huston makes the grade as Man of Steel icon Henry Cavill is included on the list of the best emerging or established British performers of their generation.
Golden Globe winner Tom Hiddleston had been discussed in some circles, but one reported insider believed that his fling with Taylor Swift in his personal life hurt his stock. As unusual as that sounds. Concluding the big seven is Idris Elba, with The Wire and Star Trek Beyond star long mentioned in association with 007 to be the first black man to do so.
