Trailer for The Repentant.
Nearly a decade into the country’s civil war, Rashid, a young Jihadi fighter, takes advantage of a national amnesty to leave the mountains and rejoin civil society. In keeping with the 1999 law of “pardon and national harmony,” he must surrender to the police and give up his weapon. Those who do so are known as “repentants.” Rashid moves into town and begins working in a café, struggling with reintegration into a community that now loathes him. Also trying to get on with his life is the local pharmacist, Lakhdar, separated from his wife and grieving the disappearance of his daughter. When the two men cross paths, they find that, law or no law, the past is not so easily set aside, and banding together with Djamila, Lakhdar’s ex-wife, they undertake to face their demons together.
