Career criminal Callum Lynch is rescued from his own execution by Abstergo Industries, the modern-day incarnation of the Templar Order. He is forced to participate in the Animus Project and relive the memories of his ancestor Aguilar de Nerha, an Assassin during the Spanish Inquisition. As Lynch continues to experience Aguilar's memories, he begins to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to confront the Templars—age-old enemies of the Assassins—in the present day.
This film has been in the works for a long time. Sony Pictures was in final negotiations with Ubisoft Motion Pictures to make a film version of the Assassin's Creed video game back in October of 2011...5 years ago!
The composer for Assassin's Creed is Jed Kurzel, who is actually the brother of director Justin Kurzel.
Assassin's Creed is scheduled to be released on December 21, 2016. The film was originally announced in May 2013 to be released on May 22, 2015, which was later pushed back to June 19, 2015 and then it was pushed back again to August 7, 2015 and then it was finally pushed to its final release date December 21, 2016 in January 2015.
Assassin's Creed is set to be turned into a franchise with at least two additional films "planned". Of course this will be determined on how well this first one does at the box office.
I have never played the Assassin's Creed video game, so I am not familiar with the story line at all. What I like about this trailer is how it sets up the backstory, so people like me have an idea of what the film will be about.
The film has a matrix feel to it with Callum entering this alternate reality. Instead of fighting powerful computer Agents, Aguilar is taking on the Templars, the enemies of the Assassins. This looks like an action packed fantasy film that I can see has potential. I have a feeling it may struggle at the box office due the super competitive December box office battles. I will be seeing Rogue One for sure in December and probably will wait to see Assassin's Creed in my living room.
