The Reason Why Ian McKellen Turned Down Dumbledore Role

77-year old veteran Ian McKellen has forgotten more roles in his lifetime than many performers are able to land. From Magneto in Marvel's X-Men franchise to the wise wizard Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the actor has an incredible body of work that is the envy of many of his peers.

It will come as little surprise then that someone of his stature has turned down a fair few opportunities along the journey. One of which was the role of another worldly wizard Dumbledore.

McKellen: I Knew Harris Was Not A Fan of Mine

Michael Gambon as Professor Dumbledore

Following comments from original Dumbledore Richard Harris that McKellen was a "passionless" performer before he died in 2002, his compatriot explained that he couldn't take on the part given their obvious friction for each other.

“When they called me up and said would I be interested in being in the Harry Potter films, they didn’t say in what part,” McKellen said. “I worked out what they were thinking, and I couldn’t … I couldn’t take over the part from an actor who I’d known didn’t approve of me.”

Quizzed by interviewer Stephen Sackur if that meant he could have been Dumbledore, McKellen replied in the affirmative.

“Well, sometimes, when I see the posters of Mike Gambon, the actor who gloriously plays Dumbledore, I think sometimes it is me.”

Did Snape Really Die? New Fan Theory Emerges

Alan Rickman as Snape

One Reddit user Der_Gottkaiser has made the bold claim that the ambiguous Harry Potter villain turned anti-hero turned hero Snape did not die after all. Although actor Alan Rickman would sadly pass away, the theory that his beloved character did not actually perish during an act of self sacrifice does hold some weight judging by the line of events.

"After the big battle, they lay out all the bodies, all the people who died, even the death eaters and Voldemort’s. Harry sees Loin’s and Fred’s body, but Snape’s body isn’t there," they remarked. "You’d think Harry would have told everyone about Snape’s sacrifice so they can find his body too. But nope, Snape’s corpse isn’t found. Just think about it, do you really think a POTIONS MASTER wouldn’t have access to anti-venom?’ the theory states. You think he wouldn’t have prepared for the possibility that Voldemort’s snake might turn on him? He was playing a dangerous role as a spy, Voldemort could turn on him at any moment I think Snape would have obviously taken some kind of prophylactic antidote beforehand."
