As for the movie, I probably won't be seeing it, but that's nothing against the actors or the creators of the film. It just doesn't "do" anything for me the way the first one did, and I grew up with the first, original "Karate Kid", (I even had the book in grade school!), so this one seems like a slight smear on a memory I'd much rather keep clean.

OMG! I stumbled across this site by accident but, having read various coments by Simon6071, I really just had to post my own views here.

Firstly, is it really any surprise that the Karate Kid is not being released in China or Hong-Kong? They ban anything that is considered remotely subversive or perceived to be against Chinese interests. Take Avatar, for example - that was pulled ( despite the fact that if you look very, very carefully, you'll note that there are no Chinese people being bullied, by blacks or otherwise). Yes, the Karate Kid does come off as being racist but in both ways. Yes, Smith does beat up some Chinese kids and comes off superior, although I guess that the plot kind of demands it - but, as a black person who taught English (and therefore lived and worked) in Beijing for 9 months, I can tell you that the Chinese are incredibly racist themselves - not just against blacks, but also whites and other 'gaijin' - as well as against other Asians (natives from Tibet being the most well-known of these, but those from Macau and Taiwain also suffer).

Secondly, whilst I agree that there appears to be a lack of Asian on Black crime in the US, do you really assume that it does not occur? White-on-black hate crime still takes place with alarming regularity, yet this too is ignored. The focus is too often upon black-on-black, or black-on-[insert race here] crime - and I agree that black criminals do nothing to help the image of their communities. Yet it is simple fact that minority and underprivilaged groups frequently lash out at others, particularly when fighting and competing for simillar (and often limited) resources. Despite their grumblings, white Americans are in a relatively privileged state in the hierarchy of the US. It is an ethnic group that suffers comparitively less than any other. I'm not saying that blacks can't do well (the success of Obama and Colin Powell disprove that), and nor am I condoning or excusing black-on-Asian violence (far from it). I'm just saying that, far from purely being a racist thing as you appear to claim, it's actually a social thing. If the social esteem of both groups could be raised (particularly blacks, who have the lowest rates of access to higher education out of ANY racial group in the US), then perhaps they could work together. At the moment, it benefits white America to have all other racial groups at each other's throats.

Personally, I'd argue that racism is NOT the major reason to boycott the Karate Kid 2010. The major fact is that the film itself is crap, with very few redeeming features. Jaden Smith isn't a bad actor - and complaints that he only got the part because of Mommy & Daddy overlook the fact that Tori Spelling's ENTIRE CAREER is thanks to her dad. However, for a kid's film the violence is gratuitous and morally offensive, particularly the scene where Jackie Chan (an adult and coincidentally, simon6071, ethnically Chinese) beats up a group of children. I'd also point out that, as a child of the 80s, the original trilogy was kitsch, but fun. Hillary Swank's version sucked; but this new one is really pointless, worthless and will probably not stand the test of time in the same way that Pat Morita's and Ralph Macchio's teacher / student relationship has.

Finally, I'd like to hold up your own bile-filled rants as proof of your own racism and shout "J'accuse". And I'll state here that any reponse you might make to this post will be ignored. I loved the movie!
For the entire movie, all I could think was, "Oh my gosh, he his so cute! He looks just like his father."
And he does! They are so similar. Even their acting is the same. There were parts of the movie where I swore I was watching Fresh Prince. :p
Jaden Smith is a star on the rise! This movie showcased his talents. He has some big shoes to fill, but he has the talent to get there and go beyond; definitely.

Needless to say, the shooting happened in a home of the poor black neighborhood. I am sure if it Aiyana had been a white girl who lived in a rich white neighborhood, her home would certainly not have been broken into in such a violent way by the police and she would still be alive today. The police in the US has a long history of using inappropriate and excessive force on black people and to a lesser degree on other minorities. It is an unfortunate accident indeed but the accidental killing of the little black girl would not have happened had it not been for the inappropriate use of force to break into the house, a decision which can be attributed to chronic disregard of the lives of innocent black people especially if they live in a poor neighborhood.
Another case of white on black police brutality is the shooting to death of an unarmed black immigrant Amadou Diallo near his home in New York by four plain-clothed cops who fired a total of 41 rounds to kill him just because they had mistaken him as a rapist who was later captured and misjudged that he had reached for a gun.
First of all, there was no justification at all to use deadly force in the above case as the man was unarmed. Second, it was egregious abuse of death force to shoot the unarmed man with 41 rounds of bullets just based on the haunch he was a rapist. No doubt above it, the police officers in the US are too trigger happy for the safety of innocent people especially if they are black and other minorities without high social status.
When the police made a mistake of using excessive force in cases of mistaken identity, they often lied to exonerate their officers. I'm a minority myself and I know from my personal experience that cops do lie to get themselves off the hook when they make mistakes.

In spite of your claim that you are no racist, the fact that you like this movie so much indicates that you do not understand what really should qualifies someone to be a non-racist.

To me non-racist means you care about acts of unjustified discrimination and crimes committed against people of ANY ethnicity. I think I misread some of what you wrote, so disregard the first part about my friend, but keep everything else. I agree with something in particular you wrote though, you said that black racists justify being racist because they feel they have that right....I think what you said is true....but I'm not like that so I can't speak for them. I can only speak for myself and as myself I loved the movie. I understand why they wouldn't release the movie over there in a way. I've experienced racism second-hand from Asians (Japanese specifically) My brother's girlfriend was Japanese (they met in college in New York) and he proposed to her, but her parents cut it off because they disapproved of the relationship. The US is moving forward, inter-racial dating is accepted by the majority here and I've never seen someone beaten up over it (I'm 15 yrs old) I understand that happened in the past, but you have to realize the US is one of the most advanced countries in the world. The movie was portraying truth. Not saying that all Asians are like that, but in China if that (in the movie) were to happen there, the fighting, division, & more would most likely happen too. Maybe in the future that will change, like it did with the US, but right now that does happen. And it probably does here too, but what I'm trying to say is not that much..less and less. AND the movie didn't incite racism towards Asians, I'm African American, and I don't have a problem. My best friend is Chinese. All in all, the movie was awesome and I loved it :) Enough said.

We know that in the animal world a male lion which is strong enough to defeat the dominant male of another pride will kill the cubs of the pride and then mate with the female lions.
Is it possible that an aging male lion, realizing that it is too old to fight the dominant male from another pride, so instead of fighting to defend the cubs in the pride, it teams up with the invading male lion to kill it’s own cubs and young male lions so that it will be allowed to survive as a ‘winner’ in the pride by the new dominant male lion which now takes the young female lions. As lions are wild animals, I don’t think any old male lion is capable of such a treacherous act and I don’t think any invading male lion would like to team up with such a traitor that offers to help the invading male lion to kill it’s own cubs and young male lions. However, I see that some human lowlifes glorify something similar to that and feel no shame about it at all.

Jaden began training for this film in California under Mike Chaturantabut. It was a blend of several martial arts called Xtreme Martial Arts. According to Mike, Jaden had no training before this. When they finalized the plot and decided it would focus on Wushu, the sport version of Kung Fu, they moved training to China. It was originally going to be called Kung-Fu Kid, but they changed it to Karate Kid in October 2009 for the sake of market appeal and to continue the "Karate Kid" franchise. Almost all of you got the wrong Idea about the name. The character was trained to do karate in Canada before they moved to Beijing, that's why he's called karate kid. At first he tried to fight those bullies with karate, but didn't work so well, then Jackie Chan saw that he's being bullied and decided to train him, with Kung Fu. GOT IT??

This movie is just an excuse to turn Will Smith's son in a movie star. This movie is going to fail big time.

Sorry the original was a coming of age movie about a boy trying to find his place and discovering love. This kid is to young for anyone to take seriously is a romantic situation. Also it looks like he''s trainging for war where as in the original the training was always calm and peacful. Also.. THERE IS ONLY ONE MIYAGI!!.. Seriously, This is Smith trying to turn his kids into movie stars, and ****ting on a classic that doesnt need to be remade in order to do so...

As one who has enjoyed the original karate kid movies, I am looking forward to this one. The trailer seems like there is enough action in it to be very entertaining. Also, Jada may be a little young for the part, but at least it will be better than than the karate kid girl movie.

This should be called The Karate Preschooler, because thats what this kid looks like. Way to go Hollywood! Remake a great film and turn it into a film for the the same people who find Alvin and the Chipmunks and Hannah Montana entertaining. IDIOTS!

Karate was actually developed/invented in an area that was ANNEXED by the Japanese.
The martial art that had developed there was influenced by Chinese and originally had the Chinese name 'karate' which is the same Japanese word (with a slightly different meaning) that is used today.

I had doubts when I heard the news of this project. Viewing the trailer now I'm actually very excited to see it. I only have one problem and that's the title. 'The Karate Kid'. Yes we all know it's a remake but it stills need to be titled, 'The Kung Fu Kid' or 'The Gung Fu Kid'. They are not in Japan!!!

Tough to say if it good or not but seem o.k. The name should be different though... This is not the first remake "Never back down" was like the Karate kid too. just named different but, same storyline. Mr Miyagi ( Pat" Morita) Died back in 2005 so... This seem to be o.k. With Jackie on it, I just hope it better then The Forbidden Kingdom with the bootleg white boy who did know how to fight. That movie would've been great without him HE MAKE THAT MOVIE SUCK BIG TIME......

You have to be kidding me. Shouldn't Jaden Smith be at home playing Nintendo Wii or something instead of being out in the streets of China!? Plus, Jackie looks like the 'Drunken Master' showing Jaden how to bend elbows, lol. I'll DEFINITELY pass on this one.

I think this movie has hit written all over it. The only problem is, they used the named Karate Kid for American viewers instead of Kung Fu Kid, which I think is a mistake. I still think it's going to be a bad ass movie, and if you don't like it, guess what, youy don't HAVE to go and see it!
