The film is based on the memoir Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen, by Jane Hawking.

Stephen Hawking suffers from motor neuron disease, a particular condition brought on by ALS. Hawking claims he was able to slow the condition for a time as he refused help whenever he could. This included him having to crawl to get back upstairs. Such a scene is shown in this preview.
