I Am Legend

Alternate Ending

Upscale Font As discussed by First Showing and /Film, the alternate ending for I Am Legend is a better representation of the source material. Instead of having Robert Neville (Will Smith) die during the final sequence, the original ending allows his character to survive with added implications.

The general consensus is that this was a better ending than that shown in theaters.

Ending
The ending shown in theaters did a diservise to the book. The book is so monumentally different than the movie, the least they could do was stay true to the centeral theme. The Doctor is actually their nightmare. Their Doctor Joseph Mengle. While the 'zombies' have gone ahead and created their own society Doctor Robert is destroying everything that they have created. That last scene where he is looking at his wall covered in photos of the creatures that he has experimented on and eventually killed demonstrates the true lesson in the movie. The idea of the book was to go against the common idea of zombie books and movies.

I prefer the other one
I have read some comments here and on youtube, and I have to agree with Gianlu64.
The sceene that leads me to think this way, is only one: the dog sceene. If that was a new society, why did his own dog attack him when she (the dog) was inffected? They had a strong bond between each other, something stronger must have broken that bond, what was it? Was it fear of getting killed by her owner? Was it the disease? I personally think it was the disease.

@gianlu64
I don't think you quite get it. The only reason they were "hunting" him in the first place was because he kept kidnapping their people and experimenting on them. They weren't zombies, and they hadn't been for a long time. They were a new society.

Better ending
This ending is MUCH more consistent with the flow of the movie and it's overall plot. I think the theatrical ending did a disservice to the book and that this ending is FAR superior.

@gianlu64
too bad for you that this is the REAL ending, this is the one that was in the book, this is the far better one, it raises a lot more questions about the movie we just saw and it makes us question what we know about other movies of it's kind

I do not like it
I think that this is a very childlish alternative to the REAL ending. There could be no happy ending but the "official" one. Why do these zombie stop hunting? Just because their "leader" had his woman back? Oh come on! So what is their disease then? Being ugly and talking with screams? No no no, A big NO NO for this version

great ending
The best part about this ending is that it turns the whole movie on it's head and shows that neville was the bad guy the whole time. he was a mad scientist who expirimented on those things. He was THEIR legend, their boogeyman, the thing they were afraid of.

Strong Ending
I just had to comment on this.

This ending (although it might not correspond to the mainline of the story) did however show that there was hope. The implication of these infected individuals had a sort of personality, which also a leader was amongst them, and brought to life emotional statuses of their well being.

Taken in account that they are pretty well...very pissed off at what wrought on them, there was hope and light that shed on their very eyes.

The strongest connection with this alternate ending was the emotional relationship between the social interactions and even watching the leader's facial expressions left us all to wonder. His countenance was so strong, that I could feel his pain that he was experiencing.

It's unfortunate that this was not the main ending.

great alternative ending
that's great a new great new theme (hope) that what is this ending about , and that why it is more great , whatever it disagreed with the main plot and the sub plots but it had to be this end no doubt . great script for both ending

What a crime....
Its really a crime that Hollywood chose to change the ending...
I mean, action movies don't have to end like this.
If this ending was chosen, it would make a whole new meaning of zombies. For example, it would show that zombies are just like us, social and orderly.
Im glad i saw this.

So much better.
That ending was much better than the one they had. Hollywood needs to realize that the first instinct for an anything is probably the best. Sometimes you take out one of the most powerful parts of the movie when you change it.

F**k you, Hollywood!
The most brilliant movie ending ever.

And it ended up on the cutting room floor. F**k you, Hollywood. Just, f**k you!
