Blade Runner 2049 Teaser Trailer (2017)

Teaser trailer for Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049, starring Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford and Ana de Armas.

Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what's left of society into chaos. K's discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.

According to Ridley Scott, who remains involved with the franchise, the sequel will have a constructed three-act storyline that will heavily involve Harrison Ford's Rick Deckard. Though Ridley Scott was originally set to direct, he stepped down for undisclosed reasons. While the decision was at first disappointing, his replacement, Denis Villeneuve, is a terrific replacement. Villeneuve has been repeatedly wowing audiences with Sicario and Arrival. The director is a master of atmosphere, which this Blade Runner sequel will definitely benefit from. But that doesn't mean he wasn't nervous about taking on such a major franchise. Villeneuve revealed early on that he was hesitant about accepting the gig, understanding the pressure that he would be immediately under.

Sean Young, who played Rachael in the first installment, went public after the announcement of a sequel asking fans to boycott the movie if she was not cast to reprise her role. Low and behold, she was not cast to reprise her role. With the decision to leave her out official, she has been relatively silent. Perhaps she will make  surprise cameo?

Jared Leto's character only required him to be on set for two weeks of the production. Does that make his character less important? Definitely not.

Though real teasers are in short supply, the Blade Runner 2049 teaser trailer is definitely that. Giving us our first look at Ryan Gosling as LAPD Officer K, we are only given a sense of setting and a big reminder that, yes, Harrison Ford is definitely back as Rick Deckard. Other than some very Blade Runner-ish visuals, we are also given some old narrative from Deckard, explaining the difference between a hazardous or beneficial replicant.

So what has happened in the past thirty years? Hard to say, but it looks like shit definitely went south. Or, according to K, "Things were simpler then."

So, doing what teasers do, they've raised our interest. The next trailer, which we can imagine until at least March, should give us a better idea of story direction. And, like most sci fi films hoping to deliver a twist or two -- think HBO's Westworld -- we might be soon asking whether Deckard is a replicant himself.
