Life is about to undergo a momentous change for Zaineb, a nine-year-old Tunisian girl whose mother decides to remarry. Not only will Zaineb gain a stepfather and stepsister but the newly blended family is preparing to leave their Tunisian home and move to Canada. Despite her grief and shock, Zaineb puts on a brave face as she gives a tearful goodbye to her classmates and teachers and boards a plane to begin a new life in a new country. This intimate and deeply touching film closely follows Zaineb and her stepsister Wijdene as they grow into teenagers, each one interpreting their new culture in different ways. While Wijdene is inclined to embrace a Canadian lifestyle, Zaineb is more restrained and unsure. Filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania beautifully captures a story familiar to many immigrant families coming to Canada, and shows how their life unfolds in both ordinary and unexpected ways.
