US Fish and Wildlife Service agent Cory Lambert is called to the Wind River Indian Reservation in order to investigate the mauling of livestock located on the property of Dan and Alice Crowheart, the parents of Wilma, his ex-wife. After concluding that the steer was killed by mountain lions, Lambert begins to retrace the trail left by the predators via snowmobile in hopes of locating their den.
In the course of these efforts, Lambert happens upon the body of Natalie Hanson, an 18-year old resident of the reservation.
