Shot in Oregon, the film is based on the personal memoir "Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail" by Cheryl Strayed. The novel was the first selected for Oprah's Book Club 2.0, and rose to the #1 spot on The New York Times Best Seller list.
