The trailer for Views on Vermeer which will make its Premiere at the 2010 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival.

Seventeenth-century Dutch baroque painter Johannes Vermeer left only 36 known works behind, yet his exquisite scenes of middle class life obsess a legion of 21st century devotees. Twelve steadfast Vermeer-iphiles trace the old master’s influence through their own work, revealing a fascinating bridge between the arts. British artist Tom Hunter recreates Vermeer’s domestic scenes with drug addicts and squatters, while philosopher Alain de Botton rejects Vermeer analysis and revels only in the atmosphere he creates. From one of the last images taken of the Twin Towers, to the Oscar-nominated film Girl With a Pearl Earring, and even to a collector’s quest to liberate a canvas from Steve Wynn’s private office, Vermeer’s imprint on today’s culture slowly comes into focus. Part critique and part historical investigation, Views on Vermeer is an engaging conversation about a master and his legacy.
