Director Ruben Fleischer does not have a ton of experience prior to being at the head of Venom, especially when it comes to directing feature films. He has only directed Zombieland, 30 Minutes of Less and Gangster Squad...plus some TV episodes here and there for shows like Superstore, Santa Clara Diet & Escape My Life.
But Venom seems to be the start of Fleischer's directing future because he is already slated to direct Zombieland 2 (starrring Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin & Woody Harrelson), Jekyll (starring Chris Evans) and The Regional Office is Under Attack (based on the Manuel Gonzales book).
I cannot remember a movie where the official synopsis was not released that close to the movie's release date... Especially a comic book film where we pretty much have an idea of where they story will go. The studio must have a good reason... So fingers crossed.
There's a lot to like about the design of Venom. Usually a film so dependent on CG effects, the characters do not come across as I imagine in my head from reading the comic book. But Venom is just as terrifying as I could imagine. There may be a bit too much CG in some of the scenes in this trailer, but definitely enough here to like as well.
Although I started off doubtful, the film is slowly showing something worth seeing. Lets hope its great and not something more akin to that Catwoman movie. Right?
