Trailer for the documentary Veinte Anos.

As we bear witness to this time of momentous transition for Cuba, Brazilian-born, Cuban-educated filmmaker Alice de Andrade’s stirring new documentary focuses on an aspect of life in Cuba that’s easily as essential as politics or economics: love.

Veinte años invokes the passage of time—in a country where time seems to stand still—through the myriad experiences of three families. In 1992, Andrade documented the ritual of marriage in Cuba after the fall of the USSR in her short documentary “Luna de miel”. Twenty years later, she revisits three families, in Havana, Miami and Costa Rica, where some are exiled. Dealing only with love, the new film reflects on recent transformations in Cuban society. No one knows for certain how the island’s culture will change, but we know that these couples and their kin will weather it with fortitude, resourcefulness and all the loving solidarity they can muster.
