Trailer for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is the visually spectacular new adventure film from Luc Besson, the legendary director of The Professional, The Fifth Element and Lucy, based on the ground-breaking comic book series which inspired a generation of artists, writers and filmmakers.

In the 28th century, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are a team of special operatives charged with maintaining order throughout the human territories. Under assignment from the Minister of Defense, the two embark on a mission to the astonishing city of Alpha—an ever-expanding metropolis where species from all over the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence and cultures with each other. There is a mystery at the center of Alpha, a dark force which threatens the peaceful existence of the City of a Thousand Planets, and Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace and safeguard not just Alpha, but the future of the universe.

This is the second adaptation of the French science fiction comics series "Valérian and Laureline". The first was Valérian & Laureline, a TV series released back in 2007. The series only lasted for 7 episodes.

Although the comics the film is based on are in French, Director Luc Besson deliberately chose to shoot the film in English with English-speaking actors in order to raise its chances of a wider audience.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets hits theaters on July 21st which looks to be a perfect weekend for the film. There is not much competition for new releases on that weekend with just Girls Trip and Dunkirk also slated for the same weekend.

At least now we get a full trailer to supplement the first teaser trailer that was released back in November. We get a more detailed look at the story line, which is great for people not familiar with the comic, along with the expansive universe.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets Trailer Screen Shot 2
While it looks visually stunning, I am still a bit on the fence on this film.  I love just about every Luc Besson film, I am not sure whether or not this film will go the Jupiter Ascending route or become another Fifth Element. I remember when I first saw the Jupiter Ascending trailer and thought it looked amazing, but upon seeing the film I was greatly disappointed.

I also am not thrilled with Cara Delevingne and Dane DeHaan as the two picked to save the Universe. I do not picture these two as galactic heroes. I find myself finding more things that worry me about this film and I hope Luc can surprise me and give us an all around great film. But, for now I plan on catching this On Demand.
