Dennis H. is a neighbor's worst nightmare. A former meth addict, convicted felon, and biker, he also counts a streak of Bengal tigers, a trio of black bears, and a pride of cougars in his gang. Fifteen years of hand-raising big cats in his backyard has served as both occupation and obsession for this collector. A self-professed animal lover, Dennis doesn't perceive any hypocrisy in keeping wild animals captive in cages. When a surprise USDA inspection reveals health and safety concerns and neglect, Dennis scrambles to find homes for all but three of his furry friends or face being shut down permanently. The community of Flat Rock, Indiana provides a microcosm for larger issues of poaching, legislation, inbreeding, and the private collection and consumption of exotic animals that does nothing to aid in their conservation. Dennis is both infuriating and endearing, a flawed mix of shady morality and naivete.
