Trailer for The Sea of Trees.
An American man, Arthur Brennan, travels to the "Suicide Forest" (Aokigahara forest) to kill himself at the base of Mount Fuji in Japan, the site of numerous suicides. There he encounters a Japanese man, Takumi Nakamura, who wants to kill himself as well, and both men begin a journey of self-reflection and survival.
You may be familiar with Director Gus Van Sant's previous work which includes:
Milk
Good Will Hunting
Promised Land
Psycho
Finding Forrester
The Sea of Trees has had its up and downs with critics. First, the screenplay was featured in the 2013 Blacklist, a list of the "most liked" unmade scripts of the year. This had hopes high for the film. But then the film screened at the Cannes Film Festival and was actually booed by the audience!
Although the title of the film is the same as several different books, it is not based on a novel. It is an original screenplay, not an adapted one.
Now that we get a domestic trailer you can see the difference in styling and movement. The frames per second is much slower and the color correction is much better than what we have seen previously in the two International Trailers we have had up to this point.
I am not sure what to think of this film. You find out that two big actors like Matthew McConaughey and Naomi Watts are starring in a film together and the film immediately gets the benefit of the doubt. But, after watching these trailer the film seems like a boring depressing couple hours. And then on top of that all the negative criticism. I think I may catch it on demand just to see how "bad" the film really is.
