The Mummy Trailer (2017)

Trailer for the reboot of The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance and Russell Crowe.

Tom Cruise headlines a spectacular, all-new cinematic version of the legend that has fascinated cultures all over the world since the dawn of civilization: The Mummy.

Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella, Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

During the trailer, you will hear Russell Crowe's character explain, "Welcome to the new world of gods and monsters." The line is actually an acknowledgement of 1935's The Bride of Frankenstein, which also used that very same phrase. As you might have guessed, this film was also released by Universal Pictures.

As a bit of irony, it turns out that Tom Cruise was considered for the The Mummy franchise back in 1999, but the role was eventually handed to Brendan Fraser. And where is he nowadays? No, that wasn't a trivia question. We actually aren't too sure.

Tom Cruise has a bit of history with the supernatural. Three decades back the actor made an appearance in Legend, and then became supernatural himself for Interview with the Vampire. What is a first for the actor, however, is co-starring in a film with Russell Crowe. Considering how big both these gentlemen are in Hollywood, it's impressive that it has taken so long for them to cross paths.

The Mummy Trailer

While The Mummy trailer is more akin to a teaser than anything theatrical, there is still a lot going on here. First off, the plane crashing sequence is insane. Sure, the visuals aren't exactly driving a story, and the sequence is almost the entire preview, but it is well done. Watching Tom Cruise, Annabelle Wallis and a number of soldiers get bounced around a plane in spinning freefall is a sight to behold. And, I don't know if it's just me, but seeing bodies go flying out of the side of the plane gave me crazy deja vu to World War Z. Same effects guy? Or possibly same technology or technique to pull off the effect?

Hard to say. But the effects-laden sequence almost runs for the trailer's entire two and a half minutes. And, just as it ends, we are left questioning how in the world that Nick Morton (Tom Cruise) was somehow able to survive. Spoiler alert, but we can assume that he isn't the only one to do so either. If you look at the soldiers who also face certain demise on the plane, you will see familiar faces such as Courtney B. Vance. I can't believe he would take on a named character just to die early on.

But, then again, how early on is this sequence? Is it possible that there is plenty of adventure to be had recovering this Mummy before the plane crash sequence takes place? Who knows! But enough about the plane crash.

After that, we discover that this Mummy is crazy sexy as Sofia Boutella and very -- what's the word? -- entitled. She must have been the millennial of her time.

Other than that, it looks like Universal is saving more plot elements for the next trailer.
