R-rated red band trailer for The Edge of Seventeen, starring Hailee Steinfeld , Woody Harrelson, Kyra Sedgwick and Haley Lu Richardson.
The Edge of Seventeen is a new coming-of-age movie in the vein of Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club - an honest, candid, often hilarious look at what it's like to grow up as a young woman in today's modern world.
Everyone knows that growing up is hard, and life is no easier for high school junior Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld), who is already at peak awkwardness when her all-star older brother Darian (Blake Jenner) starts dating her best friend Krista (Haley Lu Richardson). All at once, Nadine feels more alone than ever, until the unexpected friendship of a thoughtful boy (Hayden Szeto) gives her a glimmer of hope that things just might not be so terrible after all.
The film also stars Kyra Sedgwick as Nadine's well-meaning but completely ineffective mother, and Woody Harrelson as Nadine's History teacher, mentor and reluctant sounding board.
The film was shot under the working title Besties, and is the feature directorial debut for Kelly Fremon, who wrote the comedy Post Grad.
Considering that I grew up as a middle child with three sisters (and a brother), the story portrayed here strikes a little too close to home. If I wanted female high school drama I can just start thinking back to living with them, and my quota is full. Where the red band trailer for The Edge of Seventeen succeeds is with the casting. Hailee Steinfeld is always terrific and Haley Lu Richardson looks good too, but it is Woody Harrelson who really shines as the high school teacher who doesn't give a damn but is still there as an (unwilling) shoulder to lean on for the students, especially Hailee's character.
Considering that the trailer is R-rated, it takes advantage of the occasional F-bomb and few references to sex, but nothing to red band crazy. The comedy so far looks good, but let us recommend even more Harrelson for the next preview.
