In Riaan Hendricks’s jarring observational doc, The Devil’s Lair, family life teeters on the brink. Greying patriarch Braaim is a central member of the NTK (Nice to Kill) gang in a slice of the Cape Flats of South Africa, where living is hardscrabble. “The way he lives, anything can happen,” laments Braaim’s wife of the volatile environment surrounding their three children. Making things worse is an escalating turf war as rival gangs edge into NTK territory. Like a fly on the wall, we witness Braaim endlessly juggle street hooliganism and household responsibility—what’s a gangster to do when all he’s ever known is the street? For all the narcotic profiteering and assassination plotting, The Devil’s Lair is a portrait of a burdened man whose greatest fear is bequeathing his grievous fate to his children.
