Trailer for The Closer We Get.
The Guthries, a family who has never really opened up to one another, share their secrets and lies for the first time after matriarch Ann’s near-fatal stroke. Despite being—in Ann’s words—“very, very ordinary,” her 50-year relationship to husband Ian is anything but. Divorced but never separated, Ian and Ann live together while he cares for her. The Closer We Get presents a sharply focused snapshot of strained family dynamics: the domineering, absentee father who tries to control his children; the dutiful, picture-perfect wife who keeps it all together; and the kids who remain mum about the family tree’s twisted roots stretching from Scotland all the way to Ethiopia. This is a domestic detective story that opens up lines of communication between spouses and siblings long believed to be disconnected, and brings a mother and director/daughter closer together as they dig up ancient family history in an attempt to understand what happiness, acceptance, love and loyalty really look like.
