Until the late 1800s human beings all understood through direct experience that they are minuscule and vulnerable in the cosmic scale of things. The proof of this appeared after every sunset when myriad worlds began glittering overhead. But for a lot of people nighttime just doesn't get dark any more. Two-thirds of all humans now live in a luminous fog, obscuring themselves from the terrible honesty of a crystal clear night sky.
