The production for The Birth of a Nation was done in "shotgun" style, with filming taking place in under four weeks.
Nate Parker first became interested in Nat Turner way back in his college days at University of Oklahoma. He first heard about the historical figure while taking a class under African-American studies. This would set off a decade-plus passion project for Parker, allowing him to make what is considered a "well-researched" feature.
When I heard about the standing ovation(s) received by this film, I couldn't help but be interested in seeing what everybody was raving about. The teaser trailer gave us a great taste, but this trailer definitely works to better spell out the premise behind The Birth of a Nation.
It's not exactly as hard-hitting as the first look we had, but it does do a helluva job showcasing this film's fantastic cinematography and top-notch acting. With a release set for this winter, it does give Fox Searchlight enough time to throw out at least one more trailer, which will likely also take a different approach to marketing the film based on what we've seen so far.
