Trailer for Sonny Boy.

Offering a sweeping epic encompassing the years 1911–1945, this eagerly anticipated screen version of the best-selling novel by Annejet van der Zijl tells the real-life love story of a mixed-race couple and their struggle to survive and help others in the Nazi-occupied Netherlands. Flaunting bourgeois morality and early 20th century conventions, free spirit Rika leaves her unfaithful husband and takes up residence in The Hague. In order to survive, she rents out a spare room in her house to the university student Waldemar, a bright young man from Dutch Guyana (Suriname) who is suffering deeply in racist Holland. Soon Rika and Waldemar fall in love. They have a son, nicknamed “Sonny Boy.” As the war breaks out, they start a new life managing a guesthouse by the sea. A priest introduces Rika to Resistance hero Paul Vermeer and she begins to help him by providing a hiding place for Holland’s persecuted Jews.
