Illumination has captivated audiences all over the world with the beloved hits Despicable Me, Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, Despicable Me 2 and Minions, now the second-highest-grossing animated movie in history. Following the release of The Secret Life of Pets in summer 2016, Illumination presents Sing at the holidays. Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson, John C. Reilly, Taron Egerton and Tori Kelly star in an animated feature about finding the shining star that lives inside all of us.
CG-animated films featuring a world with no humans and instead of anthropomorphic animals is all the rage for 2016. We've already seen such worlds with Kung Fu Panda 3, The Angry Birds Movie and Zootopia.
I've been a big fan of Sing thanks to the two previous trailers, but this doesn't mean we can do without this extended version. Stretching their legs, Universal Pictures and Illumination are just showing off at this point. Sampling a few more licensed songs, the latest preview for the film showcases a ton more (impressive) footage in order to build out some depth to what looks like multiple character arcs.
There's nothing here to not love. The idea of having an animated film being a mix tape of covers is genius, the visuals are a sight, and hinting at touching stories for a number of characters is just icing on the cake.
