Jennifer Lawrence was initially cast to play the leading girl Alice. The main character Tom Ward, played by Ben Barnes, was heavily sought, with names such as Shiloh Fernandez, Sam Claflin, Caleb Landry Jones and James Frecheville all trying out for the part.
