Set in 2003 in Iraq, about a young machine gunner, Matt Ocre (Nicholas Hoult), who is among a platoon which is tasked to repair a broken water system in the dangerous village, Baqubah.

Water Problem

The film is based on Chris Roessner's true story of his own experience as a machine gunner in Iraq's Sunni Triangle.

The script for Sand Castle first appeared among the unproduced Black List screenplays back in 2012.

According to writer and war veteran Chris Roessner, he was inspired to write the screenplay for this film when he watched Oliver Stone's Platoon (1986) while in Iraq. Interestingly, the cast of this film includes Parker Sawyers, who had previously worked with Stone on Snowden (2016).

Netflix is on fire! They sure are going after the feature film market and putting their stamp as the Studio of 2017.

We had had plenty of war film of recent and while they all have a slightly different story line, they can blend together and feel like very similar movies. Even with such incredible true stories it is hard to differentiate a war film from the others. This looks like a challenge Netflix is willing to take head on.

Even with that said, this film looks to be pretty good. It tackles the issue of whether or not we should be over in the Middle East trying to help when clearly the people do not want us there. Sand Castle looks tense and like some great acting. The fact that this is coming out on Netflix means I will definitely catch this, who can pass up watching what looks like a good war film in your living room.
