Rules Don't Apply Trailer (2016)

Trailer for Rules Don't Apply, Warren Beatty's long-awaited return to the director's chair.

An aspiring young actress (Lily Collins) and her ambitious young driver (Alden Ehrenreich) struggle hopefully with the absurd eccentricities of the wildly unpredictable billionaire (Warren Beatty), who they work for. It's Hollywood, 1958. Small town beauty queen and devout Baptist virgin Marla Mabrey (Collins), under contract to the infamous Howard Hughes (Beatty), arrives in Los Angeles. At the airport, she meets her driver Frank Forbes (Ehrenreich), who is engaged to be married to his 7th grade sweetheart and is a deeply religious Methodist. Their instant attraction not only puts their religious convictions to the test, but also defies Hughes’ #1 rule: no employee is allowed to have any relationship whatsoever with a contract actress. Hughes' behavior intersects with Marla and Frank in very separate and unexpected ways, and as they are drawn deeper into his bizarre world, their values are challenged and their lives are changed.

The last non-TV feature film that Warren Beatty directed was Bulworth, a film in which he also starred, and that hit theaters 18 years ago in 1998. Crazy, right? It's his first action role in 15 years, with the last being Town & Country.

Beatty hit a few rode bumps when trying to fill the lead roles of Maria and Frank. Justin Timberlake was considered for Frank. Andrew Garfield was later cast, only to drop out and open up the door for Alden Ehrenreich. Both Rooney Mara and Felicity Jones were both sought for the role of Maria, but the production ended up settling on Lily Collins. Maybe "settling" isn't the best word, considering that she's a perfectly fine actress; and I have minor crush on her.

The poster for Rules Don't Apply already sells the old school look of the film, and the trailer pushes the look even more. The preview also makes sure to point out how the film came up with its title, as we here the title mentioned repeatedly throughout the video's running time.

So we have a great looking film with a fairly simplistic plot, what's left? The cast! The cast is insane! Not sure if ensemble describes it, but before the trailer's halfway point it's apparent that this film is chock full of famous famous and, just in case you didn't notice that fact, the point is driven home during an ensemble compilation by the end of the clip.

I honestly didn't think I'd be into Rules Don't Apply, expecting something similar and just as accentric as Woody Allen's Cafe Society. That doesn't seem the case however, as Warren Beatty has packed this film full of cool throwback visuals and tons of charm. Count me in!
