Rings Trailer (2017)

Trailer for Rings, the next film in the Ring franchise.

A new chapter in the beloved RING horror franchise. A young woman becomes worried about her boyfriend when he explores a dark subculture surrounding a mysterious videotape said to kill the watcher seven days after he has viewed it. She sacrifices herself to save her boyfriend and in doing so makes a horrifying discovery: there is a “movie within the movie” that no one has ever seen before…

This is the first film in the series where Rick Baker, has not done the makeup effects. Rick had done the previous two films. Rick retired from the industry in early 2015 and left his studio, Cinovation, to his protégée Arjen Tuiten, who had worked with him on Maleficent. While Rick had no involvement with this project, some of his crew, who had worked on the previous two with him, worked on this film with Arjen at his studio now called R-E-N. According to the new special makeup effects designer on the film, Arjen Tuiten, it took about 6 and a half hours to complete Samara's makeup and her costume featured a water rig under the dress that allowed the character to constantly drip water.

Rings is now the third feature film in the franchise which includes:

The Ring (2002) and The Ring Two (2005)

The easiest genre of film to make a sequel/prequel to for a franchise is horror, simply because they are the easiest and cheapest to make once the first film is at least somewhat successful. And it is no different here with the Ring franchise. The risk is will people get tired of a similar story being told where a girl comes out of the screen and kills you?

The first film was a big hit and then the second film had a major drop-off at the box office making over $50,000 less. I am not sure the third film is needed but Paramount thinks so and is hoping to keep cashing in on the franchise just as they did with Paranormal Activity.

Rings 2016 Trailer Screen Shot 2
I must say that there is intense imagery in the trailer, especially the hair ball scene had me gagging. We will have to wait and see if horror fans will flock to the theaters this Halloween to be scared by Samara once again over 10 years later.
