Baily and Drew Poster (real-life husband and wife Doug and Brooke Purdy) are a 40-something everyday couple: they have two kids, two jobs, one dad with Alzheimer’s, and one boob with cancer. Toss in having to plan an 8-year-old’s perfect birthday party, and all you can do is laugh … and sometimes cry. Spliced together from home videos shot in 2008 during Brooke’s actual battle with cancer and new footage shot in 2015, the film overflows with both surprising humor and uplifting humanity. Naturalistic performances by the Purdys and their own children, all in the midst of a true-life crisis, create an immediate connection that informs us of the precarious nature of both life and illness. The lessons learned are that cancer doesn’t have to be fought alone, and laughter can be found in our lives even when it’s a day-to-day struggle, all of which turns a “true” story into an authentic and heartwarming comedy about aging in a modern family.
