Coping with their autistic son Rowan would often leave Rupert and Kristin in a state of grief, shame, and frustration. Orthodox therapies had little impact, but a chance encounter with a horse gave them a glimpse into a world of new possibilities. It also gave Rupert the idea to take his son on a journey through Mongolia, where a strong spiritual bond exists between people and horses, and where shamanism-healing at its most raw and direct-is the state religion. Over the Hills and Far Away follows Rupert, Kristin, and Rowan as they traverse Mongolia on their quest. Tested to their limits, they discover that Rowan is accepted, even treasured for his differences here. In a world steeped in mystical tradition, Rowan makes dramatic leaps forward. Chronicling a couple's personal odyssey to make sense of their child's autism, Over the Hills and Far Away captures a moving journey into a little known world.
