Trailer for Out of Mind, Out of Sight.

What happens to people who suffer from mental illness and commit violent crimes? Where do they go? How are they treated? Some patients are sent to forensic psychiatric hospitals—once called asylums for the criminally insane—where they often disappear from public view for years. Following the success of NCR: Not Criminally Responsible at last year’s Hot Docs, four-time Emmy award-winning filmmaker John Kastner returns with a second powerful film from his unprecedented access to the Brockville Mental Health Centre. Kastner filmed inside this facility for more than a year where 46 patients and 75 staff revealed themselves to him, and his cameras, with stunning frankness. Inside, he follows treatment processes normally hidden from the public, profiling four patients—two men and two women— as they struggle to gain control over their lives so they can return to a society that often fears and demonizes them.
