Trailer for Other People, starring Molly Shannon, Jesse Plemons and Bradley Whitford.

A struggling comedy writer, fresh from breaking up with his boyfriend, moves to Sacramento to help his sick mother. Living with his conservative father and younger sisters, David feels like a stranger in his childhood home. As his mother worsens, he tries to convince everyone (including himself) he's "doing okay."

This is the same Molly Shannon that became famous for her "Superstar" tryouts at St. Monica's Talent Auditions, segments that were aired by Saturday Night Live. The role would lead to the feature comedy Superstar, which was released in 1999. Now a bit older, Shannon has been spotted a few times testing out her dramatic chops, with the latest being Other People.

While I typically avoid films (and TV shows) that focus on the "Big C", Molly Shannon does seem to find an appropriate mixture between comedy, drama and humility while approaching the disease. Seriously, I run for the hills, but the first trailer for Other People, thanks in part to a strong (and usually hilarious) supporting cast, provides enough to at least capture my interest. Sure, I won't be racing to theaters to catch the dramedy, but a VOD or premium network viewing definitely seems on the to-do list. Considering the subject matter, that is a feat on its own.
