Trailer for Omo Child: The River and the Bush.

For generations, the Kara people of the Omo Valley in southwestern Ethiopia have believed some children carry the curse of “mingi” and must be killed to prevent famine and disease. One of the first Kara to receive formal education, Lale Labuko watched as a child of his tribe was killed—only to learn that two sisters before him also met this fate. Omo Child: The River and the Bush follows Labuko’s return to his village years later to convince the elders to end an ancient practice embedded in the Kara way of life for centuries. Facing mortal threats for his heresy against the tribal elders, Labuko begins lobbying his people and rescuing children abandoned to die in the wilderness. An emotionally cathartic adventure and testament to the power of perseverance, Omo Child is ultimately a story of questioning the tenets of a society and resolving to adapt and change.
