The Albanian capital of Tirana has 800,000 inhabitants and just one proper cinema. When authorities attempt to destroy their only art house theatre, students, professors, activists and film lovers take to the streets. The students who built the idyllic outdoor space for contemporary and classic cinema are pitted against shadowy university officials, police and corporate interests anxious to redevelop the property for profit. The changing face of post-communist Albania is the backdrop for this classic battle between art, commerce, artistic passion and government indifference. The filmmaker’s up close and personal style makes this all too familiar debate over the public space for culture and ideas come alive.
