Where is our gender constructed—in the mind or in biology? Or in the reflection of oneself through the eyes of others? Saskia Bisp creates a thoughtful portrait of two individuals in the process of gender transition, grappling with these questions. Tomka, very much in love with his lesbian partner Lotte, is in the early stages of transition. While sure of the decision he has made to become male, Tomka is unsure of how to navigate these uncharted territories and what impact his choice will have on Lotte’s identification as a lesbian. Erik, like Tomka, was born female, but now lives fully as a man. How does his definition of manhood confront and challenge those of a biological man? Nobody Passes Perfectly opens the dialogue of gender identity, where the transgendered body and the transgendered mind attempt to verbalize a feeling that is just beyond the reach of vocabulary.
