While it is obvious that Jake Gyllenhaal lost some weight for this role, he also fell into the character. The scene in the trailer where you see the actor screaming at the mirror, he was so in the moment that he actually punched the mirror, broke it, and injured his hand. After a brief visit to the hospital, the actor was quickly back on set.
