1976, Philadelphia; Marcus (Anthony Mackie) returns to the neighborhood where he came of age during the Black Power movement, and to Patricia (Kerry Washington), the widow of his martyred best friend Neal. Patricia (Kerry Washington), carries on, raising her precocious daughter Iris (Jamara Griffin), while trying to remain true to her Panther roots. Marcus’ return stirs up the community; many suspect him of being to blame for Neal’s murder. Patricia welcomes Marcus into her life and home. As he befriends the fiercely independent Iris, she starts unraveling the truth behind her father’s murder. Hoping to find redemption, Marcus instead finds an unlikely family. But in order to earn their love he must confront the truths that kept him away for so long.
