Director Guzman Garcia wants to make a film about love. Naturally, his first inclination is to turn to older people, assuming they’ll have more wisdom and experience to share. Finding a dancehall in Montevideo, he collects 11 stories from those who frequent the bar only to discover that even in one’s older years, understanding matters of the heart is complicated. Filming his subjects in the familiar surroundings of their homes or embraced in a tango, Garcia captures an intimacy for the couples and singles that allows them to tell their stories of joy, loss, family drama and betrayal. Each story is unique but there’s one common thread: when it comes to understanding the most powerful emotion felt by humans, we truly have no idea what we’re doing. Answers to the question of love evade us all.
