Set in Ramsay's native Glasgow, Kill the Day is a compelling study of the inner life of an ex-con junkie whose ability to distinguish between reality and memory/dream life is beginning to erode. Ramsay skilfully manipulates the soundtrack, which has the double effect of pulling us deeper into the non-linear narrative while shrewdly dislodging the protagonist from his own story. As he lies in bed pondering his fate, the abject James would appear to ask himself not "who am I?" but simply, "where am I?" Bleak, but totally absorbing.
