I, Tonya Trailer (2017)
Trailer for the biopic I, Tonya, starring Margot Robbie, Sebastian Stan and Allison Janney.
Based on the unbelievable but true events, I, Tonya is a darkly comedic tale of American figure skater, Tonya Harding, and one of the most sensational scandals in sports history. Though Harding was the first American woman to complete a triple axel in competition, her legacy was forever defined by her association with an infamous, ill-conceived, and even more poorly executed attack on fellow Olympic competitor Nancy Kerrigan.
Featuring an iconic turn by Margot Robbie as the fiery Harding, a mustachioed Sebastian Stan as her impetuous ex-husband Jeff Gillooly, a tour-de-force performance from Allison Janney as her acid-tongued mother, LaVona Golden, and an original screenplay by Steven Rogers, Craig Gillespie's I, Tonya is an absurd, irreverent, and piercing portrayal of Harding’s life and career in all of its unchecked -- and checkered -- glory.
Though Margot Robbie has a bit of skating experience thanks to an intramural ice hockey league she played in, she still needed plenty of training with the help of choreographer Sarah Kawahara. Though Robbie definitely pulls off a look that is at least similar to Harding, the actress couldn't help be five inches taller than the pro skater.
During my "Sport Appreciation" class in college -- yep, took it as an elective -- we learned some of the politics of figure skating and how Tonya Harding didn't have the "princess" look to ever win a gold medal. Sure, she could be the better skater, but the politics of the sport wouldn't allow her that sort of achievement; no matter how good. So it made sense that frustrations could arise that would lead to an event like Nancy Kerrigan, the "victim" skater who the media treated like a princess, but was the typical mean girl in the locker rooms.
My mind was blown. In short, figure skating was absolutely full of shit. And now it looks like a movie might have fun with that very notion. The first teaser for I, Tonya is a bit short, but so far I'm incredibly interested to see what NEON has in store.
